Ole Miss senior Shey Taiwo, an indoor and outdoor All-American as well as the No. 2 competitor in collegiate history in the weight throw and the No. 9 all-time NCAA performer in the hammer throw, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss her world-leading 82-1 (25.02m) weight throw performance Jan. 28 at the Indiana Relays in Bloomington that elevated her to the No. 4 athlete in American and global history. Taiwo reflects on the first 24-meter throw of her career Jan. 21 at the Vanderbilt Invitational with her opening-round mark of 79-1.25 (24.11m) and how that breakthrough propelled her to such a memorable achievement the following week in Indiana, in addition to looking forward to returning Feb. 11-12 to Nashville for the Music City Challenge. She also shares how meaningful it was to have her father present at the meet in Bloomington and how much Taiwo appreciated the support from the spectators and her fellow competitors. Taiwo revisits her sixth-round effort of 233-10 (71.27m) in the hammer throw in June at the NCAA Division 1 Outdoor Championships at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore., to place runner-up behind collegiate record holder Camryn Rogers from Cal, who secured the title with a 247-9 (75.52m) performance. She explains how that outcome, which qualified Taiwo for the Olympic Trials, changed her outlook in regards to competing as a post-collegiate athlete and her potential to contend for making U.S. national teams in the future. Taiwo speaks about the competitive and supportive environment in practice with U.S. champions Jessica Ramsey and Janeah Stewart as part of the training group, along with fellow Ole Miss standouts Jasmine Mitchell, Tedreauna Britt, Deborah Bulai and Jalani Davis. She also analyzes her collaboration with coaches John Smith and Connie Price-Smith, and how instrumental they have been in developing her into one of the most accomplished throwers in NCAA history. Taiwo examines the lessons learned about consistency and the importance of a short-term memory from placing third in the weight throw at last year's Division 1 indoor championship meet, and how it has created even more motivation for her and Mitchell to secure the top two spots March 11-12 at this year's NCAA final at the CrossPlex in Birmingham, Ala. She speaks about the potential of the Rebels to contend for a team podium spot at nationals, and the support the throwers have received from all the other event groups. Taiwo also shares how her business Shey Butter Cosmetics has become an LLC, and how she continues to balance academics with training and competition, along with creating and selling lashes, lip gloss and body butters.
